Choosing a career could be so overwhelming when you are about to enter your college days!

But aside from that, are also the pressure that you can get from your loved ones, friends, and other people around. They might have countless opinions and suggestions on what course you should be taking, but it should be all up to you. You should only base your final decision on yourself, from what you want, what you are passionate about, and what will make you happy!

Nursing is for those who have the calling to serve, care and contribute something to this noble profession. To serve its purpose is simply to be compassionate with your family, community, and society. Be able to contribute something with regards to improving someone’s life. It might be to work in a healthcare facility, provide health education to the public, serve patients, coach someone to reach his/her potential in life, or simply write articles that are related to health and wellness, that could help readers to get insights about the importance of health and life.

Nursing isn’t only inside the hospital, you don’t only find nurses at the patient’s bedside.

You cannot only find nurses in the different corners of the hospital like the operating room, out-patient department, emergency department, medical-surgical units, etc. Some people might think that nurses should only be found in the hospitals, and are not called nurses if they don’t. But definitely, it’s not! Once they became nurses they are forever nurses. They are still called nurses, even though you’ve seen them outside the hospital providing different types of specialty. Nursing as a profession is very flexible. It is also adaptable to change, but it’s up to you to figure out what you should be doing. And you should align it with the skills, abilities, interests, capabilities, and the current situation that you have.

So, why will you choose nursing as a career path? The following would guide you on this question:

• Because it defines yourself, your values, and that you believe you can help the health industry. Be it by becoming a staff to a healthcare facility, becoming a health educator, or running an independent business that can have an impact on the healthcare system, etc.
• Because nursing is a fulfilling profession. And you want to help and serve. It will not only help you grow professionally, but it will help you grow personally. It helps you grow further from your daily life activities.
• Because you can make it as a stepping stone to further upgrade yourself, if you want to become a nurse leader and run your organization, your nursing profession is a good starting point to make it. But before doing that you have to finish your graduate school degree, like taking up a Master’s degree program to further equip you with knowledge.
• Because there are numerous things that you can do about it. If you love taking care of individuals, you can be a bedside nurse working in a hospital. If you want to work in a corporate setting, you can be a company nurse. If you love working with kids, you can be a childcare nurse. If you love to educate, you can be a clinical instructor. If you love writing, you can be a nurse writer, etc.

Nursing is a profession that focuses on caring for an individual, family, and the community.

The goal is to provide optimal health and be able to provide a quality of life. That’s why, if you are interested in becoming a nurse, be mindful of what Florence Nightingale once said.

Nurses should have the urge to do something for themselves, for them to be more knowledgeable and to be more credible in delivering care to other people. Learning isn’t finished when you graduated with your college degree. Learning isn’t finished by the time you passed the licensure exam. And it’s not yet over when you are already in service! Embrace continuous learning to upgrade your knowledge of the current trends in the healthcare industry and be able to know what you can do to help in the development of the healthcare system.
