How to stop feeling insecure and build self-confidence?

Insecurities are feelings of inadequacy, or you feel like you aren’t good enough as a person, as a parent, as a friend, co-worker, or partner.

You are uncertain of so many things about yourself, of what you can do and what you can offer to the world. There is a feeling of uneasiness triggered by self-perception of vulnerability and feeling of being low or inferior in some way, it threatens your self-image or ego. Insecurity could interfere with your life goals, relationship, and your ability to face hard situations.

Most of us deal with insecurities from time to time. Like when somebody said you’re good, and then you replied no I’m not. Sporadically, it’s because you are just humble, but you should be aware that being overly humble already leads to something wrong.

You browse your social media account, and you saw your friend posted about his/her achievements, and then you said, he/she is exceptional, I’m not! Sometimes insecurities are manageable if we can easily observe them on our own, like oh I’m feeling insecure again, this isn’t good. You have self-awareness and that is awesome! You have to realize that you should be thankful for what you have, don’t compare yourself to anyone, and always accept compliments.

Sometimes it becomes unmanageable that it already ruined our day, goals in life, and relationships with other people. Insecurity comes from various causes and reasons.

Causes:

  • Childhood- having overly critical parents
  • Critical partner, friends, or relatives
  • being a victim of bullying
  • Failures in life
  • Anxiousness
  • Sadness
  • Having an illness
  • being perfectionist
  • Negative beliefs and perception
  • Behaviors that you see in your society.
  • Excessive use of social media

Signs:

  • Criticizing self and others
  • Having low self-esteem
  • Perception of low self-worth
  • Unsatisfied life
  • Poor decision-making
  • Excessive jealousy
  • Easily offended
  • Needs constant reassurance
  • Attention-seeking behavior
  • being a people pleaser
  • Acting like a boss
  • Apologizing constantly

Be wary that insecurities can affect our mental health, and bring about issues like depression, low self-esteem, and anxiety disorders. These health issues can also contribute to eating problems, a bad lifestyle, and poor sleeping habits that could lead to further diseases.
